This was Doug Gibbons, a.k.a. Thane Russal , smash Hit way back in 1966, a very particular cover version of the Otis Redding original.
One of my all-time favorite sixties song
Sadly Doug Gibbons passed away on July 2010. R.I.P.
a Big Thanks to Giorgio for the rare pics !!

  • Journalist/photographic 'producer'/sometime Beatles/Apple assistant Jeremy Banks was the marketing brain behind Thane Russal, whom he spotted working as the office boy for Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham

  • Produced by Paul Francis Gadd who in the 60's was known as Paul Raven, but in the 70's he became the notorious Gary Glitter.

The session musicians are: Guitars = Big Jim Sullivan & Jimmy Page. Bass = John Paul Jones. Drums = Bobby Graham.

  • oh Gibbons died. Oh...I'm sorry to hear that

  • ... superb!

  • Thane recorded a last 7" under the name of Zingaro in France in 1978

the songs are Hard road and Hold on

    see my selection

we are all looking for a sequence on Tv or at least hearing : I found out...

  • @spider15able Great version, the one I learnt from but NOT ORIGINAL

  • hey does anybody know if this came out on an lp?? thanks in advance for any help!

  • Great photos Oldcapellon. I certainly agree that it's a pity there's no video but there's not much you or I can do about that unless we just happen to have a copy in the closet (ha!). it would be nice if some people were more appreciative of the efforts of people like yourself who go to a lot of trouble digging out these pictorial relics. I, for one, really do appreciate that.

  • original and the best------------- sadly no-one has video of this song--bloody pathetic
