DeFranco was great!...I agree with every thought here mentioned. He was considered a "modern" clarinetist in times when the clarinet sound was (improperly) considered "dated".

His style is very unique,his chose of grupettos is exceptional!one of the best (for me best=unique).

for me, one of the great duets in jazz history was Buddy recording with Art Tatum, especially as there were 2 takes of 'Deep Night" which is one of my alltime favorite tunes. They seemed to revel in each other's playing. Well done Norman Granz!!!
Once you hear Buddy DeFranco (if you have any ear) you know this clarinet player was different! Isn't it astounding know that every good musicians paints a different picture..and that's Jazz

I really enjoy the technical aspects of Mr. DeFranco's playing including his speed and range. I especially like how he get "outside" the tonality without harsh disonance. He also uses every othe technique to show off the instrument's grace, speed and tonal beauty. I have certainly gained a greater appreciation for this modern jazz artist. Bravo.
