Tim Eriksen plays Last Chance on a fretless banjo

This is one of my favorite tunes. I first recorded it for a Cordelia's Dad 7" ca. 1991 and then again on my first solo CD. The banjo was made by Ellis Wolfe of Butler, TN who made some of the best instruments I've ever played. He said he learned to make them from "Old Man Stanley"- Stanley Hicks, who used to walk down the back of Beech Mountain into Tennessee to see Ellis. This was my only banjo for about fifteen years until I got a giant mass manufactured monstrosity that's more amenable to being tuned on stage.

The sap buckets are out- the snow's almost all gone. I miss it.

I've been studying the works of Dock Boggs very intently, and this tune sounds so similar to a tune he played that I was attempting to pick up. Its in another video on Youtube actually, with Mike Seeger playing it on Dock's actual banjo. Mike referred to the song as Davenport.

I love how you can see the wood wearing/discoloration of fingerboard down to the fifth string tuning key. A well-loved banjo, to be sure.
