I think the line "You get up and sleep" can be interpreted in two ways - one, the idea of simply living through a day with no significance and going to bed and two, it seems to be reflecting Bowie's struggle to overcome emotional numbness (going through a day as if asleep) - I may be wrong, don't berate me if I am but that's my opinion.
