Dr. Lynn Eckhert, PHMI's Director of Academic Programs, recently published a study of offshore medical schools. The study, entitled, "Private Schools of the Caribbean: Outsourcing Medical Education", was published in April 2010 in Academic Medicine, the Journal of the Association of American Medical Colleges. In this interview, Dr. Eckhert discusses looking at education programs in three dozen Caribbean medical schools to better understand the education being received by students who will eventually work in the United States.
Lots of deficiencies; unequipped labs, high student:cadaver ratio to name a few. As a Canadian student, who was in the Caribbean system for a year I was horrified and appalled at the standard of education. I know there are exceptions which include the big three, but in general it is a terrible and deficient education.

Along those lines we should look at Black affirmative action students and Black only school like Howard and see if they are up to par.
States can sort out licensing and they can accredit schools. A federal group with an agenda does not need to be inn the loop.
US doctor=Greed
Carib Docs just want to practice medicine
Most malpractice is aganst US grads with bad attitudes. . See what percent of classes are taught by MD or PhD in US vs Caribbean .

I remember a debate club in early 90-ies, the matter discussed was something like high fever and stiff neck ... The winner was a young doctor who said he would ask for a CT scan. Great! That much about taking things for granted.

This is amazing! Residents teach medical students?! This might be a tradition but could hardly be legal. Think about it!

You would be surprised to find out how well educated are medical students outside US/Canada. Could cut down this imperial attitude towards barefoot doctors. That would be nice. Even polite. And awarding.

Nice video. Perhaps the LCME can take the initiative to broaden the scope of their oversight and design an international standard that would encompass schools outside of America/Canada.
I'm sure some of these schools, specifically ones that have had site visits and accreditation by the California medical board, would be glad to see this become a realization.
