Beaver Junction
written by Harry Edison
performed by Count Basie & His Orchestra
recorded 10 April 1951
released as Columbia 39406 in May 1951

Bob Mitchell, Al Poricno, Clark Terry Lamr Wright - trumpets
Leon Comegys, Matthew Gee, Booty Wood - trombones
Rubin Phillips, Marshall Royal - alto sax
Wardell Gray, Lucky Thompson - tenor sax
Charlie Fowlkes - baritone sax
Count Basie - piano
Freddie Green - guitar
Jimmy Lewis - bass
Gus Johnson - drums

This might not be a sound that you would expect from Basie, but it is a nice ride with Clark Terry featured here along with Basie and gang, none the less. This would be the last master from the last session for Columbia (you know, contractual things as they were) before Count Basie disbanded the troupes. This didn't last long as he was back the following year with a new band and recording contract with Norman Granz.

  • Swingin' as usual with Basie! Funny name for a tune. Bad Sweets!

  • And a promo to boot!

Nice, easy groover indicative of what Basie had up his sleeve as the 1950's rolled on.
