These riffs were in the Malian repertoire a few thousand years before Bono was born. You have it back-to-front.
Another one from Malian tradition is the "Little Red Rooster" riff.
Vieux has put the line from U2's song in it to make it a little more accessible to his audience.
"Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For"
is just a 12-bar blues. I think U2 owes more to Malian music than the other way around.
