  • Magnificent voice; never heard of him before! Do you have any more of his recordings? Please post it!

  • I've actually got 73 of his recordings uploaded so far.

If you go to my channel page, and put his name in the search bar in "gramophoneshanes video's", they should all come up.

They date back as far as 1904 & some are on cylinder records. The early recording dont sound this good of course.

  • Hi GramophoneShane. Have you got the Rollicking Gay Highway by Peter Dawson? I'd love it if you could upload it.

    Many thanks

    Lammy

  • I'd never heard of Peter Dawson before but wasn't he great! I'll be playing more of his recordings.

  • what a lovely voice. The sort of voive that could stoe all your prize posessions in. Brilliant.

  • Great to hear this wonderful Australian singer, bought back memories from long ago!

  • my dad loved peter dawsons records

he said it reminded him of his dad who was also a bass baritone

youve just transported me 45 years back

  • @hashatz

According to John Freestone, who studied with Blance Marchesi [daughter of Mathilde, teacher of Melba and many other divas], Blanche considered Dawson to have the finest technique of any singer. Dawson studied with Sir Charles Santley.

  • This is the second recording I have found of my mother's cousin Hubert Greenslade. He is the pianist on the recording and I don't know enough about him. I only know he played the piano for many well known artists some time ago.

  • love this version of this song ,great voice thanks for sharing

  • Dawson was a wonderful singer.Terrific voice and a heck of an interpreter. I can listen to him all day.

  • Wonderful post. For a country of only 20 million Australia is quite accomplished.

I first heard Peter Dawson on late Canadian musicologist Clyde Gilmour's program on Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Hooked me on public broadcasting around the world. Your ABC isn't bad.
