i think we can both agree that PIM isn't as good a stat for enforcers as # of hits or # of fights.

yes and no, PIMs are something ppl use as an enforcer stat b/c 5 min for fighting added up multiple times generally outweighs 2 min for stupidity over the length of the season. I know from listening to Nick Kypreos and Doug Maclean (who was a GM for ~10 years) that they definitely look at PIMs for comparables when making contracts to enforcers. russians got completely different mentality.. but anyway, i can bet that, even in nhl coach will do that, if fans will throw something on coachs head and security wont stop fans..
another side of story, in america, sport is a business and show. but in some of other countries, is not commercial successful yet, so people live with sport, otherwise sport will die..so the people dont care of image, its just part of life. who hits you on road, will be paid back, same as in arena.
