Since I'm not and have never been in English major, I will not draw the conclusion. But is it something that grammatically prohibits to write or say "I went to my part-time job"? If it only concerns with the simplicity that matters, then it's much useful to say "I worked". I don't know exactly what she's trying to pin-point, but if she means to preserve privacy I guess you don't need to specify job category. However, there are many college students who have full-time employments in the U.S!
