Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II (Part 5)

Date: June 2, 1953

In Westminster Abbey, where English kings and queens have been crowned for 900 years, Elizabeth triumphantly receives her crown on June 2, 1953. Indeed, there were more than 200 microphones in the Abbey and along the procession routes, with 750 commentators broadcasting in 39 languages.

The Archbishop of Canterbury administers the Oath, and presents "Queen Elizabeth, your undoubted Queen," meaning by hereditary right. The people respond with shouts of "God Save Queen Elizabeth." Elizabeth solemnly promised and swore "to govern the People of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Union of South Africa, Pakistan and Ceylon."

The procession of the royal coach through Trafalgar Square to Buckingham Palace is a spectacle unlike any England has ever seen.

  • A oath to god for her people which she has kept till this day. There's people out there in this day and age can't even keep a oath to god in marriage vows including her son and thats a vow to only one person. She took her vows seriously as a Christian maybe if people did the same society would be a better place

  • Utter bullcrap this royalty thing and monarchy! I thought the Enlightenment has done away with birthrights and the whole Holy by birth crap! Give me Democracy or give me death!

  • @JustJim70118 You are correct except for one thing. Prince William is not a child of the sovereign, so he is not entitled to the pre-nominal definite article; as such, there is no "THE" between his HRH style and his princely title. When his father accedes to the throne, he (and his brother) will become entitled to that honour.

  • @michaeljacksonlvr0 Wait a minute its going to be Prince Charles not Prince William going to become King.

  • @JustJim70118 i don't think she is princess william, because her husband holds a peerage ie Princess Michael of Kent, etc. i think she's just HRH Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, Countess of Strathearn, Baroness Carrickfergus.

  • This is a truly holy liturgy of the coronation where our sovereign vows to God and her country to rule justly and to protect the weakest in our society. Perhaps it would be a good thing for each new government to do likewise.

  • True royal magic !!! I´m only 25 so i thibk there is a good chance i will be alive to see both Charles and Wiliams coronations. I wish we would have kept the coronations here in Sweden too !

  • So they should bow...

  • @michaeljacksonlvr0 I hate to be so technical, but Catherine is not Princess Catherine. She is The Princess William, much in the same way that Sarah Ferguson was never Princess Sarah. She was The Princess Andrew. However, tradition being what it is, each of the Princes was created a Duke, thus making his wife a Duchess. Catherine is formally known Her Royal Highness The Princess William, Duchess of Cambridge, Countess of Strathearn, Baroness Carrickfergus.

  • @meknight77 Well, a couple reasons why a Catholic ceremony would be appropriate. 1) England is historically Catholic, and 2) the current law specifically bars Catholics, or anyone married to a Catholic, from succession to the Throne. A Catholic monarch, or even a Catholic consort, would be a significant step forward for religious freedom. My ideal would be a Catholic monarch as head of a Catholic state, which tolerated all religions and in which the state was divested of the church.
