Arsenic used to be added to the mix too. At the factory I worked at was a murder involving arsenic, which was freely available at that time (early 1960's)

Seeing the glowing glass fly down those chutes reminded me so much of Star Wars I had to resist the urge to make "Peew, Peew..." noises. :-)
