A more beautiful and inscrutable cinematic puzzle has never been made. The Criterion release of this film is possibly the best blind purchase I ever made.
I especially recommend the "Unraveling the Enigma: The Making of Marienbad" supplement. Great insights on what it was like working with Resnais.

The screenplay by Robbe Grillet is the meaning of the film, the surface action is the reliable space we all move through, the unreliable spaces are the memories which are emotional zones where meaning is unable to define itself, the beauty in the passing moments are lost by the hope in the protagonists desire to control memory, and the ending shows no possible resolution of that desire, the story completes itself in the inertia of the subjective .

There is only one meaning or sens of that movie : Beauty.

“Last Year in Marienbad” (1960) by Alain Resnais as a Comedy about the Fixation of Human Soul on Elevated Amorous Object
Elevated Amorous Object (EAO) as a “Muse of Human Soul”, Soul’s Vital Spirit (its Anchor in the Visual World)
read the rest by Victor Enyutin

@IleanaCosanziana Having been a film student myself, I can confess that our analysis often never goes beyond the obvious. And there again, more emphasis is usually placed on the visual aspects of this film.

@duckman531 I haven't found anything along my lines of interpretation. I was a bit outraged myself to see that film students and certified film critics couldn't muster up a deeper analysis. Yet I am unfortunately not certified in film studies and the best I could get out of coming up with this interpretation would be to have it "stolen", which is a quite sad position to be in.

@IleanaCosanziana I had to research your hypothesis to fully understand it, but I think your impression is very perceptive! I've never really read any in depth scholarship on Marienbad. Has Resnais ever spoken about the meaning of this film? Most criticism I've read on Marienbad deals with it's amazing visual style.
I rented this movie and saw it for the first time and I was like "WTF is this?" Didn't think much of it, but I couldn't get it out of my head...I ended up buying the Blu Ray version.
