  • If a U Tube is used which contains salt solution and food colouring on one side and clean water on the other side with both open ends elevated and the bottom of ther U tube suspended off the ground how long should it take for equilibrium of fluids to develop?

  • Im not sure why it is suspended from the gorund? Also the key feature in osmosis is the semi-permiable membrane, are you assuming the two solutions are seperated by such a membrane? Osmosis rates would also depend on the temperature, there is an equasion which determines the rate of osmosis, I think its the Ernst equation, or something like that. I guess at room temperature equiblibrium would be reached in about an hour with most set-ups on tis scale, John
