If a U Tube is used which contains salt solution and food colouring on one side and clean water on the other side with both open ends elevated and the bottom of ther U tube suspended off the ground how long should it take for equilibrium of fluids to develop?

Im not sure why it is suspended from the gorund? Also the key feature in osmosis is the semi-permiable membrane, are you assuming the two solutions are seperated by such a membrane? Osmosis rates would also depend on the temperature, there is an equasion which determines the rate of osmosis, I think its the Ernst equation, or something like that. I guess at room temperature equiblibrium would be reached in about an hour with most set-ups on tis scale, John
