ROCKET HAND SEA DOGS FIRST LOSS OF 2009-10
The Saint John Sea Dogs suffered their first loss of 2009-10 on Wednesday night, falling to the P.E.I. Rocket by a score of 6-1 in front of 3,021 fans at Harbour Station.
Saint John is now 4-1-0-0 on the season, good for first place in the QMJHL Atlantic. Meanwhile, P.E.I. improves to 3-0-0-2 with the road win, leapfrogging the idle Moncton Wildcats to seize sole possession of second place in the division.
Benjamin Casavant (2), Josh Currie, Jordan Escott, Jarrad Struthers, and Chris Doyle all scored for the Rocket on Wednesday, while import winger Tomas Jurco tallied the lone marker of the evening for the Sea Dogs.
Skating in his first game as a Sea Dogs, star winger Mike Hoffman was held off of the scoresheet despite producing several offensive chances. The overage forward finshed the night with three shots on goal.
In his first start of the year, veteran Marco Cousineau earned the win between the pipes for P.E.I., making 23 saves on 24 shots faced. Karel St-Laurent suffered the first loss of his sophomore season in net for the home team, allowing four goals in twenty minutes of action.
The visiting squad from the Garden Province started the match off exceptionally well on Wednesday, taking a 3-0 lead in the opening half of the first period on goals by Josh Currie, Jarrad Struthers, and Benjamin Casavant.
Tomas Jurco got Saint John on the scoreboard at the fourteen minute mark of the first, banging home a loose puck following a lengthy scramble in the Rockets zone. Sophomore defenseman Kevin Gagné picked up an assist on the play, setting a new career high for points in a season with seven in the process. Gagné is now the Sea Dogs leading scorer this season.
Casavant restored Prince Edward Islands three-goal advantage 3:50 later, wiring home his second power play marker of the night on a bullet of a wrist shot from close range that beat St-Laurent high, glove side.
Marc-Antoine Gelinas took over for St-Laurent at the start of the second period, coming up with some impressive saves early in the stanza to keep his team from incurring an insurmountable deficit.
New York Rangers prospect Chris Doyle managed to beat the overage net minder on a booming point shot late in the middle frame however, giving his team a 5-1 advantage as Wednesdays match reached the forty minute mark.
Rocket centre Jordan Escott then netted the lone tally of the third period, resultantly giving the visitors a five-goal road victory.
Up next for the Sea Dogs is a Friday night match versus the Victoriaville Tigres at Harbour Station. The puck drops at 7:30pm as Saint John looks to pick up the fifth victory of their fifth anniversary season.
