Railfanning Oroville, California: March 26, 2009

Train #1) Beautiful sunny spring weather sets the scene as an eastbound Union Pacific KLTG1 double stack intermodal rolls by with GE C45ACCTE #5292 leading. EMD SD90/43MAC #8121 serves as the rear DP unit.

Train #2) Later, I hike to the top of the hill and the cut at the Thermalito diversion dam to get a nice view of GE C45ACCTE #7888 and EMD SD70M #3838 leading a westbound KG1LT stack out of the deep cut. GE C45ACCTE #7735 serves as the rear DP unit. One can view the entire Feather River Nature and Recreation Center from this spot. This area is a popular and favorite place for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, swimming, and railfanning along the Brad B. Freeman bike trail, that runs from the Thermalito Forebay, west of Oroville, to the Oroville Dam, just a mile or two from this location.

These one engine northbound stacktrains are getting pretty common lately. In fact I've been seeing these on a regular basis during the week come through South Sac. on the Sacramento Sub. Do you know why UP is setting up the northbound stacktrains this way?
