Hi, I just read your comment about oils and sweat affecting your soldering. It does not. I have never worried about it, and have purposefully put oil on the silver and the solder to proove that it burns off far before the solder is ready to flow. Just spray on Auquiflux and solder. In 35 years I have never cleaned my Silver or my solder.

Interesting!
My tip won't flux; I think it did get too dirty.
Because when I put the solder on a higher part it does then.
Should I file the tip?

Hi, I really do not know exactly what you mean. Please explain it a little more.
Thanks, Don

can sterling silver pieces be soldered together with them being just firecoated with boric acid, without being fluxed? by the way, what's the active chemical compound in flux?

Hi, yes you could just use borax, but why not just spray you flux (AquiFlux) so that you do not have to spend that time doing it. Boric acid is an important part of good fluxes too. useful tipps
on the net i've found info on some Resin type flux and some corrosive flux on ZnCl2 or NH4CL basis, but i'm not sure which one is the adecvate for soldering silver. by the way, do you happen to know the chemical composition of flux used for soldering silver? or at least the most active compound in it.

I use AquiFlux from Euro-Tool. It has boric acid and borax in it. It is cheap so I do not make my own. I now have all my video classes on 15 DVDs.
