Taking apart a Samsung Impression to replace the digitizer w/flex cable and the flex cable that opens and closes when the phone is opened and closed.

Thanks to bkroo45 for his video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOH-Fl3jlj4 which made it possible for me to take mine apart.

Here are the steps which take you up to the 4:42 mark:
1. Remove battery and sim card and unscrew 6 screws along the top and bottom edge.
2. Carefully, pry off the back cover starting with the bottom edge (near send and end buttons).
3. Pry up the little round speaker-be careful!
4. Unclip the antenna wire at the bottom right of the main board.
5. Unclip the flex ribbon at the bottom left of the main board.
6. Pop up, but do not unclip, the speaker at the top left of the main board.
7. Fold the main board to the right and unclip the flex ribbon from the underneath. The main board is now free.
8. Remove 6 screws from the silver frame.
9. Remove 1 screw from the antenna on the bottom right of the phone.
10. Pop up the antenna and remove the 2 screws from the cover underneath and then remove the cover.
11. Remove the silver internal frame. Be careful not to damage the flex ribbon.
12. Remove the keypad.
13. Remove the 1 screw that hold down the flex ribbon.
14. Remove the 2 screws that hold the keypad frame to the slide section.
15. Remove the keypad frame from the slide section. Feed the flex ribbon through the opening.
16. Remove 5 screws from the slide section.
17. Remove the front housing of the phone from the slide section by prying around the edges with a plastic tool.
18. Feed the flex wire through the opening.
19. Unclasp the ribbon on the right side behind the LCD screen. This is the digitizer flex ribbon.
20. Remove the screw at the top left for the ear speaker and unclasp the ribbon on the left side of the LCD screen.
21. Remove the flex ribbon and ear speaker carefully.
22. Unclasp the button's flex ribbon and remove the buttons and the LCD screen.

  • Received both parts yesterday and phone works like new again, surprised as it took a beating. One thing that I didn't get with the digitizer was the glue seal adhesive stuff that surronds the outer edge of the digitizer. The old glue came out perfectly stuck to the digitizer and I removed it the best I could and placed it on the new one, did not stick much but it's on. It came with the seal that pushes up against the screen but not the outer glue. Do all new digitizers come without new adhesive?

  • @MrStihlSawing Some come w/o the frame. I dont know why anyone would sell it that way. But that's when you have to glue it back in yourself. I remember reading somewhere how to do it. So, it works ok, then?

  • My touch screen stopped working on this phone(A877) after about 1 1/2 years. I finally got pissed at it and threw it down into the carpet hard enough to seperate the two halfs breaking the ribbon but nothing else. Now I'm looking into finding a way to bring this Impression back to life and found this video. I guess all I needed before I threw it down was the digitizer but I got frustrated in the moment. Where can I get these parts and what is the right name for the ribbon?

  • @MrStihlSawing OEM Samsung Impression SGH A877 Flex Cable Ribbon Part on ebay. About $5. This is the ribbon that broke. It's delicate.

Original LCD Touch Screen Digitizer For Samsung AT&T Impression SGH-A877 on ebay. About $5. This is what the faceplate is called.

Good luck and I hope you don't throw anything when you're working on it!

  • Thanks!

  • @julieannjohn Well..as much as it hurts me to say, there is NO WAY for me to retrieve any of my data from my Impression to my computer without using the touch screen. I will lose ALL important information und memories are lost. :L It sucks because I actually got the screen to turn on without looking all funky but as I said nothing will work w/o screen access. I wish you could fix it for me!! >__< Haha I really don't want to lose this info. It's not petty stuff like pictures, well yes but no.

  • @julieannjohn Hey there! I apologize for taking 6 months to reply back, I haven't forgotten to do so it's just that it took me forever to repair my phone..well at least attempt to. You were right, this is a very long intricate process und I'm very disappointed in the outcome.................

  • @julieannjohn Thanks for the response. I actually spent some time looking for these two items right after I posted and did find them and ordered them. They were 11.40 shipped so not bad if the phone works again. Thanks to this video and the other I should have no problem getting it back together, I hope anyway since the halves were separated from the track. I don't see how there can be dislikes on videos like this unless you are a person who doesn't want people to know how to fix it yourself.

  • did you buy the digitizer?and if so how much did it cost?

  • nice move.

  • nice move,,,,
