Hi everyone. My name is Hae woong Jeong. Today, I'm going to show you how Kukak is such a special music; Kukak means Korean traditional music. You may wonder what is interesting part of Kukak. You can find it after listening this podcast.

First of all, I will introduce Kukak briefly, and then I'm going to explain why Kukak is unique. Foreigners may not know well about Kukak, but many foreigners probably have heard about Pansori, Pungmul, and Sinawi. Pungmul was originally created in farming culture to celebrate and ensure good harvest. Pansori is proclaimed by UNESCO, masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity. Sinawi is accompanied with a rite of Korean shamanism. Those were brief information of Kukak, then let's find out the uniqueness of Kukak comparing to western classical music.

Kukak is more destructive form than classical music. Above of all, Kukak is improvisational. For example, the one of Kukak, Sinawi, even doesn't have a musical note, then we may have curiosity; how they are could play their instrument without note? The answer is they just follow their mind and audience's reaction, but not with considering chord which western music usually does. Even if they don't consider chord, what is amazing about Sinawi is they make harmony, so someone call it order out of chaos. Another uniqueness of Kukak is that it is activeness and rhythmical. Pungmul is famous for these characteristics. Not only music but also dancing and colorful costume is included in the performing. It also plays over the field, so it's not static. Classical music doesn't have motion and moving, but Pungmul has. Performers of classical music just sit and are separated from watching people, but Pungmul plays along with the crowd. Counteraction from auditorium is also essential component of Kukak. We can easily find out it to compare opera and Pansori. Opera and Pansori is very similar; Pansori is basically story telling structure, it is same as opera. but Pansori needs reaction, Chu-im-sae, from drummer and spectators. They exchange a feeling and make two-way street.

Now you may think that you discover unique music in the world. This is end of my podcast. Thank you for listening my podcast.
