The Taser was originally designed as a non lethal way of knocking down a dangerous suspect without having to kill him with a sidearm. In theory, it is a brilliant idea. Unfortunately, many police officers have decided that the Taser is really a compliance tool, and have been using it as such. It is a new technology that will require a higher level of sophistication from the officers who are given Tasers to take out on the beat.

Just another reason why some clear legislation banning the use of tasers as a compliance tool should be drafted. As a Canadian, I watched the RCMP get off the hook for killing Robert Dziekanski; Four armed police officers, killed a man with multiple taser activations, simply because he was verbally irate. Four officers against one tired and upset airline traveler. Seriously, here, they felt threatened enough by a 72 year old to fire? Surely you must be joking.

The original design of the Taser was as a non lethal weapon. However, you are correct, Tasers have caused over 300 deaths since their introduction in 2001. Amazingly, Taser International has yet to lose a lawsuit in any of these cases.
