Shiloh Baptist Church of Washington, D.C., celebrated Congressional Black Caucus Sunday Sept. 30, 2007, with Thomas Dixon Tyler serving as organist for the services. The Gospel Choir sang. Shiloh's 3,600-member congregation enjoys spirited services and warm fellowship in the heart of the Shaw historic district. The pipe organ is a 48-rank Casavant dedicated in the 1960s and restored in the 1990s in Quebec after a fire gutted Shiloh's sanctuary. See http://www.shilohbaptist.org.

  • God has blessed the Shiloh Baptist Church with the leadership of the Senior Pastor The Reverend Dr. Wallace Charles Smith and his lovely wife Elaine. I am proud that he has a Tennessee connection. I visited there on Sunday for the morning service. BTW Ms. Marian Wright Edelman, President of the CDF is a member there.

  • What beautiful organ music! Thanks be to the almighty God!

  • Amen. And the words are so deep. READ the verses in "Come Ye, Disconsolate" or "We Gather Together." "We Gather Together" is also on my channel, and I have included the original words (We call to extol thee, our leader in battle...) I have argued that in eliminating the more formal and traditional hymns and anthems, and in avoiding refinement and dignity, we grow sloppy in our approach to God, and our personal lives become sloppy in turn. We need a return to tradition, I argue.

  • Thanks.

  • I know that's right. In 2005, I attended the convocation for the United Pentecostal Churches of Christ in Chicago and song that had the people running, shouting, dancing and falling out was the hymn "Glory to His Name", aka "Down at the Cross, where my Savior died". We ahould never forget those songs.

  • I live in Oregon but have been attending a MEthodist church now (Rose City Methodist).

  • Exactly! How many black churches have hymn books in them, or a choir, organist or director that have the wherewithal to minister them? The hymn and the anthem, sadly are a dying breed in the black church. But they are the pure Word of God. If you've ever been to a GMWA Convention, it is the anthem of hymn that will slay them!

  • man how many baptist churches in America have a large organ?

  • I live in Baltimore, but attend Shiloh because I found it difficult to find this type of worship in bmore. What is the name of your church?

  • I agree of course Jesus is pretty cool.
