Back in 1950, my grandmother was shopping in downtown Waco--she was in McCrory's 5&10 and heard this record playing over the PA system. She liked it and bought it for me for Christmas. I fell in love with it as a six year old, and the next year with On Top of Old Smokey. I'm sure my grandmother would have been astonished if she'd known The Weavers were Communists, but on the other hand she probably would not have known what a Communist was.

  • A lot of our most gifted artists around this time were well intentioned, gullible and seduced by pie-in-the-sky idealistic ideas of a communist utopia. Most were still good Americans, but some were led to betray their country for a bankrupt system.

I hope most people can see the artist for their actions and talents and forgive their naivity and never have black lists again.

  • @edr341 You're exactly right! I think the beauty of their legacy in music greatly overshadows any wrong thinking they may have had in the hysteria of the time!
