PART£:and then to say "but he ruined himself".This is a way to-at-whatever cost-relativize the beauty of his singing. And the most false thing is to say that he lasted 6 or 8 years!!!!! I have a 1960 live rec from vienna of "forza del destino",a 1961live rec of "turandot",a 1964(!) live la scala rec of "rienzi"(!!!!) conducted by scherchen..and how he gang!how he could convoy his pure lyric instrument to Lirico spinto repertoire ...just through accent, diction, and most perfect phrasing of them all

@Lovelytenor1 PART ":
so the problem is not to say that Pippo didn' t last long ...because it's not false...the problem is to take Di Stefano and only him as an example of short shining star...Del Monaco' career didn't last any longer after 1962 his career was downing)...Callas voice began to break down in 1957...and there are other examples....
but the actual trend is to say "pippo was glorious";Pippo had the most beautiful voice";"pippo was the most passionate", and so on...and then to say..
-
@Lovelytenor1 in the world one can say whatever he wants. You know when i get angry? when spaeking of Di Stefano, instead of speaking of him in the glorious years (which didn'last 5 or 6 uears but 13 to be precise)-somebody wants at whatever cost to put the accent on this "damned "decline...there is a sort of - let's say,-"fashion"with Di stefano...and the fashion is to perpetuate this false myth of early decline.Callas and other singer didn't last any longer (indeed Callas lasted even shorter)

@fabriou Last year I found a YT vid of 3 tenors singing an aria. GDS, Bjoerling, & someone else. People were attacking GDS in the comparison. I want you to know that I defended GDS. I pointed out that due to his perfect technique JB sang well until he died. The recording of GDS was late in his career & he was already in decline. I suggested that they listen to GDS in his glorious prime & then compare. Personally, I wish I had heard him live on the stage...& I have the right to say that, OK?
-
@Lovelytenor1 let me confirm...you are NOBODY...
DI STEFANO, SCHIPA, BJORLING, CARUSO, MARTINELLI will go into history. You and Pavarotti won't go into history;you because are a nobody of the opera (sorry);pavarotti because volgarized the art of canto.I find Pavarotti from the 80s onwords more vulgare than every shouting note of late Di Stefano
If you say, Di stafano won't be remembered in future, you re free to say it;Human Being has been given the gift to say even things he doesn't believe.
-
@fabriou I've seen you defend GDS many times, & thats fine. No, I did not compare myself to him & he DID have a great career on stage. People who heard him said that only live on stage could he be appreciated.
However, through the years new people will still listen to Caruso, Gigli, Bjoerling, Pavarotti & hear voices properly/beautifully used.....not so much for GDS.
I just got selected to join a Three Tenors group w/2 young tenors. Personally, I'm glad I did not ruin my voice.

@Lovelytenor1 but to sing 100 years like you do is useless...to sing beautifully 20 years (from 1947 to 1961)like Di stefano is the ART of CANTO...23 ...by the way ...you name 23 years of singing like that "early end"?...and ...sorry...you make me lough by putting yourself ( a useless unknown want-to-be-singer) on the same context with a giant of Opera like Di Stefano...please be honest....don t be ridicoulous
-
@fabriou Yes, so many people liked his sometimes rather "raw" sound. It could be exciting. Here in this lilting song it was sometimes pretty but often ugly. It is, I suppose, a matter of taste.
Sadly, as you know, this inability to master his art ruined his voice and ended his career very, very early. This you cannot argue. Here at 65, I can & do still sing beautifully. I did not receive GDS's gift but I learned how to use mine with intelligence & a better artistic sensibility.

@Lovelytenor1 the opened wowels ARE indeed proper...what is whit other tenors, who sing "o" instead "a"...for me...who am italian, it's bad...Di Stefano's singing is like speaking...it's fantastic!...marvellous...
