The Broadway Melody 1929 commenced production in June 1928 at a time when technicians were still struggling to come to terms with sound. Despite the drawbacks of shooting this historic movie with a single camera bolted to the floor and recording sound from a steamy enclosed booth, the results were dramatic. Irving Thalberg, the ever thrifty head of production, slashed the original budget from $500,000 to $379,000 but the first year's gross of $2,808,000 wildly exceeded MGM's expectations. This original all-talking, all- singing, all-dancing film became the template for the early musicals pouring out of every major studio in Hollywood.
