Barack Obama, the US president, is set to will face a key defence spending decision - whether or not to continue production of the most expensive warplane in the Pentagons arsenal.

The debate over the future of the F-22 Raptor has become not just a question of its military worth.

As Tom Ackerman reports, thousands of jobs are on the line.

After the report Shihab Rattansi spoke to Travis Sharp, a military analyst at the Center for Arms Control and Non-proliferation, about US military spending.

  • i agree with f22raptorff, part of war and defense is also barking instead of biting. A country would'nt want to pick a fight with the most up to date military. Enemy leaders would be too scared to cause problems.

  • Their not a waste of money. Freedom isn't free and to insure our freedom and air dominance we need the F-22. We don't want to have a fair fight with the enemy. With russia's new fighters it would be a fair fight and we don't want that. we should be able to fly around blow up anything we want and have the enemy wondering where those F-22's are.

  • O: mg fire? holy crap! lol and they though made in china is shit. 350m is so huge its laughable. :) but seriously :(

  • I totally strongly disagree on Pierre Sprey that if F-22 got hit by .50 caliber the F-22 is on fire? Yeah Right! The F-15E got hit by larger caliber than .50 caliber during 1991 Gulf War and is still manage return to military base. Sorry Pierre Sprey your wrong about F-22. The F-22 got better protection than F-15E. The F-22 outer surface components is made of 39% Titanium, 24% Composite, 16% Aluminum, & 1% Thermo Plastic.

  • Bad news.

  • healtcare and for poor ppl more. wich is a good thing

  • they only export 1 version of the f35 us makes 3 dif versions for navy us air foce and armie so those ass country dont rly get nothing much

  • The F22 is no doubt a great fighter, but lets not forget its roles- its an AIR SUPERIORITY fighter. The enemies that US is currently fighting against have NO AIRCRAFT. So the F22's Air Superiority is rather meek. The F35 however is a versatile aircraft that is suit for BOTH AIR and GROUND, with capabilities, that aren't too far off from the f22 at a lower price. In the current wars, the A-10's are ideal for its durability and low ground attack capabilities to support ground forces.

  • Sorry, wasnt for you(reply)

  • No F-22 has ever flown a combat mission. They cost hundreds of millions of dollars and have never been used.

  • The f-22 is a tremendus asset in wich we can own the skies niow that they stopped we are going to have f-35s wich are being exported to some ass country and there u go secret gets out a russia and china figure it out and the there goes our air superiority the get mas preduction on some invisible fighter and were screwed do know why because there will be no f-22s a the f-35 will have some akealies heal and were screwed

Plus i dont like the idea of sharing the f-35 its a mistake.

  • I think they should postpone the project until this country has money again.... but this is not the first thing they should postpone. There are plenty of other costly "projects" that should be canceled/postponed before this one.
