On the 21st of June Shetland Museum, Lerwick, launched a replica "sixareen" a vernacular fishing boat, the first to be built in Lerwick in over a century. Also a haddock fishing boat.
Very interesting video! The term sixareen/sixern is the same as "seksring" in Norway - a traditional wooden boat with three pairs of oars. "Seksring" is a contraction of seksaering, or six-oaring in English.
We have added your video to the Shetlandlive website - the social networking site just for Shetland.

Isn't there a story to be told about a crew who had seen many winters and a craft that had seen none?

Oh, and I wish they would stop flying the scottish saltire at the museum. It's an insult to us.

Good to see our Shetland heritage being preserved but the names they gave the two boats were very poor.
It should hav been old sea words or something.

Glad I found this little film. It looks like it was a big day out in the Shetland Islands.
Was there anybody left in town or was the whole of Lerwick there? :-0
