I explain three different models you can use to show why subtraction of integers works: 1) number line jumps; 2) concept of difference; 3) positive/negative counters. The bottom line is that students need to learn the shortcuts and rules, but these models can help justify the rules.

  • @skitt1z1 if you have 2-(-2) that means you have two minus's beside each other which automatically turns into addition so basically it'll be 2 + 2 which equal 4

  • I dont understand how 2 - (-2) can be 4. How can takeing property away from the initial 2 make it become a larger number? it does not make any logical sence to me :S any help?

  • I do not understand this. And I can't move on to Algebra until I do.

  • Thank you. :]
