Orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist Dr. James Cunningham of Orthopaedic and Neurosurgery Specialists (ONS) in Greenwich, CT discusses ACL injury and arthroscopic ACL repair:
A reconstructed ACL not only stabilizes the knee, but also prevents damage to the menisci cartilage that often occurs due to an unstable joint. Surgeons use part of the patient's own tendon or a cadaver tendon to reconstruct the ACL. Now this surgery is almost always done arthroscopically and has a 95 percent success rate. A supervised physical therapy program, following surgery, is very important in order to strengthen the quadriceps muscles and restore mobility. http://www.onsmd.com/acl-injuries/
