I would appreciate it if Autodesk fixed these bugs instead of adding more and more features. I love new features, but not at the expense of a stable application. I think these bugs have been around since I started using 3ds Max at v4. 3ds Max is currently at v10.

I have been noticing these bugs for a long time and they keep reoccurring over and over. I thought that 3ds Max users would get frustrated with 3D modeling if these workarounds are not known, hence the video.

If there are better ways around these bugs or to prevent them (still using 3ds Max), please tell me so, I would love to know! If this video actually helped, I would like to know too.

This video took more than 10 takes to get it to the point that I was happy with and about an hour to set up the scene to get the bugs to occur. If you think the the video stunk, then blame my inexperience with making tutorial videos. :-) Actually, this is my first tutorial.

The yellow circle highlights my cursor, the red circle shows when I left-click and the blue circle shows when I right-click.

I used Camtasia Studio v3 for the cursors for the video.

  • Heh, those are not bugs in fact, and the first one is a feature. I still wonder how to fight a worse thing - Undo stage bug. Messes up in case of undoing different link operations making the model transforms ruined so that the Redo command doesn't work in the desired way in order to at least bring it back, also sometimes making a heavy scripted animation just gets the Undo command disabled completely. No workaround I know of besides rapid saving )

  • The first one is not a bug as I realized, but how about the rest? Perspective view is wacky with cutting. No cutting allowed sometime. Double vertices? These are "features"?

  • >These are "features"?

    >those are not bugs in fact, and _the first one is a feature_.

Disability to read is a bug.

Anyway, those are not something to destroy hours of hard work, those just add a tricky bit everyone already has tricks to deal with.

  • Was that a pun? I read that you stated that what I showed are not bugs. Anyways, why are they not bugs?

  • Just like I said the first one is a model coordinate space redefinition thing everyone enjoys unless you have to deal with this rare and unusual requirement of transform reset (the ""bug" workaround" was more of a simple modelling example in fact). As for the rest, I didn't intend to make it yet another "this vid sux haha" post, just wanted to make it clear that those are just a few minor issues every skilled modeller has already developed ones workaround for. The worst things are tough to solve

  • My video was to help unskilled modelers. I agree that with experience, every skilled modeler will already know this. I am not familiar with the undo stage bug. What is going on?

  • Cool, I did not know about that. This is one of the reasons I made this video, to learn the right way to do things. I stand corrected.

  • cool tutorial, great narrating voice. i second the Command Panel->utilities->resetXform for your bounding boxes.

  • Thanks, that was very informative!

  • Thanks soooo much! Very helpful!!!!
