@BreakWatcher a machine is usually $4000-8000 for a small desktop based machine for home use. yes, you can buy one on your own, just reminding you that they're expensive and unless you are running a metal part making business, it really won't be a good investment.

First, leftovers should be recycled.
Second, there are a lot of mills that have been converted to CNC, not all that hard.
I have an old Bridgeport mill that I converted.
Got the mill for around $200 and the stepper motors are from old computer printers.
The computer that runs things is whatever I am using at the moment.
But there were days of setting it up to get it running.

@BreakWatcher The metal that is milled off is usually swept up and thrown away. Yes you can buy a machine like this for personal use check out Grizzly machine tools. As for price it depends what you want you could modify a $500 mini mill to be cnc controlled and come out at under $1,00, but a decent size machine will be around $5,000 and a high end model can be $30,000 plus.
