This is a stretched 7/8" chain that was chewing away at the case. It could be jumping too but I never got an input speed sensor error. It had about 9K miles on it, all with 225/50/16 street tires.

  • So far, as a daily-driver my chain has lasted 18,000 miles and still has only about 1/2" slack. My car has no torque management at all.

When I lost that chain on the 125C it was induced by a bearing that slided out of the driven sprocket support and misaligned the chain.

  • That's bad about the discontinued 1" chain.

The chain is made by Morse HyVo for GM. Wonder if you could find a distributor who would have the chain stock?

Then finding the sprockets would be difficult since they are special for the transmission.

I bought a new chain and sprockets for a 440T4 from Transtar and had the sprockets machined for the 4T65E. It didn't cost much at a local shop that I use for many odd jobs.

  • Yeah, there is the Bonnie, Riviera, and a Cutlass Supreme that have done it. I don't know if there is enough room to fit. I was going to get a cheap core to test fit first. The main problem we have with the 4T65E is that the 7/8" is the strongest chain we can buy since they don't make the GM 1" racing chain anymore. The rest of the trans can hold the power but what good is that when you have to put a new chain in every year.

  • Maybe! I know one person who has done that in a Bonneville. Had to use a relay to get the shift B signal correct for his PCM.

Would there be room in an A car for that?

I've been told a 4T65E can hold 800 HP so I'm going to try a few more times before I give up on mine.

  • You're right, it's probably the chain. I think a 4T80E swap is in my future.

  • Most of the time when it's the flex plate, don't you usually hear it at idle more than under power?

Don't give up on it! This car is far from a POS!

  • Wow.

I had my trans apart for a torque converter change this week. The old one sent shavings through the whole system and I ended up needing a new valvebody!

Working in re-installing the trans now, with a Precision of New Hampton 3-disc clutch converter.

My 7/8 chain has about 18,000 on it and still feels good.

It may not set a code until it actually starts to slip a little? One pop every now and then may not be enough error to throw a code?

  • It's a single 7/8" chain with ~9K miles on it. If It was stretched I should get an input shaft speed code. It sucks but that's pretty much the strongest chain we can get since they don't make the 1" anymore.
