Thanks John, for creating this video presentation! And, much thanks, gratitude and respect to the Urban Permaculture Institute of SF for creating this beautiful example of an urban permaculture garden!! To anyone interested in assistance creating and/or promoting their own open-source blueprints for a more sustainable future, search out sustainabilitynonprofitDOTorg for details on how "One Community" can assist in our collective co-creation of a new way to live!

I have been reading and studying permaculture and its many uses for a very long time now. As far as growing some greens this is the best choice!

Wow the broken concrete looks so nice. Love it & love your videos! Thanks!

Thanks for the video John , I have to check it out next time I go into San Francisco . I want to grow like this .

The squash that is growing 8 feet up in the air is the Cucurbita ficifolia (common name Chilacayote or fig gourd), which is eaten like zucchini when young, and candied when it matures. What is planted in addition to the espellier trees on the South edge of the garden, is complemented by 90+ other fruit, almond and avocado trees. Next time you're around John, lift up that Cob Bench and check out the lively family of worms crawling inside! I live 2 blocks away.

Smiling. John, I am in utmost appreciation of your earnestness, enthusiasm, and absolute immersion (and love for?) all things green. As well as your choice to go far and wide - while sharing your explorations! Blessings:)

This garden was created through Urban Permaculture Institute of SF, teachers David Cody and Kevin Bayuk. David is out there every Friday with students past and present working the garden. I was very lucky to have gotten dirty out there myself (particularly when building the cob bench with my fellow students) when I earned my PDC this summer. It's an amazing space to be in and to look out over the city. You can see more 18th and Rhode Island videos on the website.
JOHN - If you don't get a radio mike I'm going to send you one when I get real rich.

I wish we could meet the gardeners. Are they shy? Or just not photogenic?
Love your channel. Keep up the good work.

Nobody was around when I filmed this video. As I can suspect, minimal "effort" is put into this garden, as nature grows by itself :)

hey john! I heard that asparagus fruits are poisonous! can you confirm or deny this?
upnorthfarmer1 6 months ago
Asparagus fruit can contain toxic glycosides that may not be so good (toxic). I only eat the "skin and pulp (which is hardly any). I have had up to a dozen asparagus fruits (spitting out the seeds) with NO adverse affects. Apple seeds also contain "toxins" as do mango skin. So caution may be warranted. I also believe the DOSE is the poison. I usually just snack on them when I see them RIPE. (another distinction) but get bored of picking them and usually dont eat many.
