This is the better of the two cuts! This is a fascinating yet quite dark cult supernatural German horror fantasy drama thriller from Roland Emmerich that was a box-office smash in Germany in November of 1985. The movie pays tribute and parodies the films of Spielberg and Lucas but not in a sarcastic or mean-spirited kind of way but uses some of those references as playful since this movie is basically about going into the imagination of a young boy who's dad just recently kicked the bucket is obsessed with movies like E.T. and Star Wars as he wants to live through them like his dreams but soon discovers his dreamworld becomes a nightmare. This version offers a better music score, more character development, and of course more darkness then the U.S. version plus it's subtitled in English with the German language.

  • @TurkishWarrior80 It's an homage to Steven Spielberg's early films, not a ripoff.

  • @Johnlindsey289 Its a good immitation of poltergeist and E.t. together.Nothing more.

  • @Johnlindsey289 That's right. My room was filled with Star Wars merchandise as a kid. Dark Knight and Heat are very similarly styled action / crime dramas.

  • @TheAltair4

Yes, almost any 80's boy had SW merchandise in their room. Even some people have compared Dark Knight to Heat and they are both awesome movies.

  • Thank you. I always wanted to see this movie but never got around to it.

  • @Johnlindsey289 True, and just like in E.T. and Poltergeist, Joey has a lot of Star Wars toys and stuff in his room.

  • @TheAltair4

Oh yes there is references to E.T. espcially with the merchandise. At least it's better than that miserable Mac and Me.

  • @Johnlindsey289 No, there's no aliens in it but Emmerich was trying to make a movie in the same vein as Spielberg's earlier films. Joey's room was obviously patterned after Elliot's and the neighborhood looks a lot like the one in both E.T.and Poltergeist. The government scientists setting up operations at Joey's house is also very similar to what happened in E.T. All of the moving and flying toys are obviously a Poltergeist / Close Encounters reference and the red phone glows like E.T's finger.
