  • Americanos cost more because it requires more labor to prepare and the cup cost does factor in...also an americano drinker will use way more creamer and sugar on average than an espresso drinker It sounds as though you have never owned or run coffee shop.

Am I wrong on that? I only ask because if you had then you would know these things. Perhaps we as operators need to do better at explaining the costs behind the coffee.

"Americanos cost more because it requires more labor..." Are you serious? Adding hot water takes approximately 3 seconds, and with the huge markup on coffee drinks of any sort, I hardly think that peripherals will add any significant cost. You are also assuming that the beverage is in a disposable cup. Many shops charge more despite using reusable cups.

After giving your answer some serious thought I must admit that I was wrong. I can see how making an Americano vs. straight espresso is more costly and you are indeed justified in charging customers more. Thanks

  • I don't care how good coffee tastes that come out of cat crap.. It's not going into my mouth.. haha

  • No kidding...and I've recently seen it for $500/lb! That's some expensive $#IT!

    Cheers.

Hope to see you at an industry event one day. Lots of great community to be experienced in the specialty coffee world.

Do you think that a shop should provide hot water for free or not have americanos at all?

Ever do the math of what it costs to purchase a hot water tower? If you want a quality americano then you will want your shop to use a quality water source. That means you cannot use the espresso machine as the water is far too hot to preserve the integrity of the espresso that is about 100 degrees cooler than the tea tap it also rules out the too hot spigot on a brewer.
