SPCA Says Dog Will Make Full Recovery After Drinking Anti-Freeze

VICTORIA -- Spud the dog hasn't stretched his legs for a few days, and he's still a bit shaky after drinking something that belongs inside a car. "Unfortunately anti-freeze poisoning is extremely lethal if you don't catch it within eight hours you'll definitely lose the dog" says Penny Stone of the Victoria SPCA, who took Spud for a walk Friday.

But they didn't lose this friendly fellow, and Lake Cowichan's Jean-Paul Langlois is the reason why. Langlois knows Spud as Stinky, the neighbourhood dog that's always hanging around. But last Sunday the spunky mutt was anything but. "I woke up and found him laying on my front lawn and he's pretty friendly usually he gets up and greets me in the yard but this time he wasn't getting up" says Langlois.

Langlois rushed a woozy Spud to the vet in Duncan, but it was closed, and getting desperate while also in a rush to catch a ferry from Victoria he took Spud on a road trip. "I went to Victoria, and got him to my mom's vet. He was pretty close to death's door when we got him there" he says.

But death's door stayed locked up tight - Spud got help in time. He was treated for anti-freeze poisoning, which lasted about 72 hours, and he actually came out of it with a bit of a hangover. "What you use is actually an alcohol, you kind of make the dog drunk for 72 hours to try and flush everything out of his system. It binds the poison and the toxins can't escape" says Stone.

Now that Spud, or, Stinky is heading for a full recovery, and his owner has chosen to surrender him to the SPCA, Langlois would love to adopt him, but sadly he won't get that chance. "It would be uncomfortable to adopt the dog back into the neighbourhood" says Stone.

Which means Spud is looking for a new home, and maybe you can help. If you're interested, call the Victoria SPCA at (250) 388-7722.
