A special part of 2009 Homecoming festivities at Tulane University was the Hullabaloo Homecoming, a party and auction of more than 240 items to benefit Tulane student-athletes.
Auction items included Super Bowl tickets, hotel stays, restaurant gift certificates, jewelry, an ESPN experience hosted by ESPN sports analyst and Tulane alum Shaun King, destination packages in New York and Las Vegas, sports memorabilia and more.
The hottest bidding was for a dinner prepared by chef Tory McPhail of Commanders Palace and shared with James Carville and Mary Matalin at the Cowens' home.
The Board of Tulane gave the top bid of $45,000 to honor Cowen and thank him for his work on behalf of Tulane and New Orleans in the four years after Hurricane Katrina. A book by best-selling author James Patterson will be dedicated to him and one of the books characters will be named for him. Half of the $45,000 bid is designated for student-athletes and the other half goes to the Cowen Institute for Public Education Initiatives.
