Vote for this film in the '10 minute movie contest', we would appreciate your help, we are match-up #18 - http://www.movieplayoffs.com/10minutemoviecontest.php

We made it into round 2 of the '10 minute movie contest' and if you enjoyed the short, it would be great if you voted for us.

Follow John Doe an author from 1940s America and have an insight into his mind as he tries to create a best selling novel, however from the start as he tells us his name we know there is something wrong.

This was my first ever short film, I knew from the start I wasn't going to be 100% pleased with the final edit, however I can learn from all my mistakes and keep everything in mind for my next short film, and hopefully I can get better. As they always say, 'the only way to get better, is to be bad at something'.

I had major rendering problems in Sony Vegas, which is why I had to split it in half and edit it back together using the YouTube editor, which is why there is a slight fade with the video and audio around 2:38.

  • Was this edited with the Youtube Editor as said in the description? Because I got to say that your first final cut wasn't the last ;) Also color grading was much better than expected after reading you comment. We'd appreciate feedback on our work to, cheers!

  • @sauerstudios No I used Sony Vegas MS to edit, but I was having rendering problems, so basically I cut the file in half, rendered two separate files and stitched them together using YouTube editor, which is why the music slowly fades out in and around 2 minutes in. And what do you mean by the first final cut thing? :) Glad you liked it aswell, I have a lot of motivation at the moment to create more films

  • @RedSpectrumPictures Aah, I thought that you must have used some editing suite! Actually I wanted to make a joke by saying that your first cut wasn the last or final (cut pro) somehow didn't work..

  • @sauerstudios Actually I did assume you meant something about final cut pro :)

  • It's nice, the typewriter shadow is perfect for mise en scene. Nicely filmed however not sure about the use of still images (yes I know the acters and actresses repesent famous Film Noir films and thats what you're talking about in the VO) but honestly it's pretty rare to still a montage of stationary images. Maybe slowed down but not just photos. A few of the Film Noirs will be legal to take from too so you could've ran it though a slow down to like -4x so you had slight movement. but its great

  • @carrotman Hey thanks for the great comment, glad you liked the film. The shadows where my favourite aspect of it. I wanted to do more of the silohete, like the man with the gun,, however didnt know how to do it, that is why I used the still images,

  • @DominoFlare It was great working with you on this :) you composed an excellent soundtrack

  • this is pretty good! i like it =) the one thing i didnt like though was that you weren't subtle; i think it would have been more enjoyable if there had been less narration and more focusing on the music and visuals. what goes unsaid is sometimes just as important as what is said. but overall, i liked it :)

  • Also, In the 1940's it was considered extremely rude to wear a hat inside.

  • Errr, They didn't have lamps the one on the desk in the 1940's sorry.

  • @RedSpectrumPictures Oh, okay that makes sense. Thanks for clearing that up.

  • @RedSpectrumPictures ah like the plot unfolding in shadows on the wall behind him live? That sounds amazing, a really high contrast film of acters not lit up against a heavily lit background and then transposed with like a fade put in would probably give that effect, then again I only have windows movie maker so this is mostly hyperthetical, closest to this it my 'comet' video.
