@tomthegreat188 Really? A sound noone's heard before? Try ripping off REM. Because that is the so called 'new sound' they came up with starting on Flip The Bird. Seems to me, not only did they lose what made them Husker Du', but they sold out by copying other mainstream bands in ways that most people would not respect them for if they realized it. That is what you do when you get poppy, change to a major, and homogenize your sound for the idiot masses. It's nothing new. good luck ;)
@PasoliniIsMe Good man. Right on! But I won't listen to anything after New Day Rising, sorry, It goes against everything I stand for and love in music... good luck.
For one thing even if Husker Du "Sold Out" with their later albums if that makes people go back and listen to their albums and breach out into a new sound of music they haven't heard before then so be it. Husker Du should be on everybody's list of music to listen to. This band essentially is the pinpoint for most good music after the fact. Without Husker Du music would be a much scarier place than what it is now. So quit bitching about their albums turning poppy and just fucking listen.
Fuck it, selling out or not, as long as it says Grant, Bob, Greg, I am down to listen. First Husker Du record I ever bought was "Candy Apple Grey" and I love it and all of their records.
Some people even feeel NewDayRising was the sellout. But I maintain that theystill had their footing rooted in spot's ugly production, sst diy aesthetic, and emphasis on loud abrasive punky emo music. There were pop undertones that signaled the future, just as say Hootenanny did for the replacements... But just as every ba
nd hits that point where youth and aggression disappears from their music, 'flip the bird' was theirs :P
Whatever you say, they changed their style completely and went 100% pop alternating from goody tooshoes happy glossy shiny popdom of flip your wig/warehouse to depressed&sad on life pop of 'candy apple grey' all the same thing. They quit on punk/diy/independent music on 'flip your wig' never to return to what they once were. Wig was basically their major debut. If they had creative control that makes their selling out that much worse and more obvious. Nobody forced them to do it, they wanted to.
selling out and becoming popular are two separate things entirely husker du set the stage for bands to maintain creative control on a major label something unheard of back then. selling out requires a band to allow an image to be formed for them by a label for profit... they never made all that much money or allowed warner to create a false image of them.Mould even managed/booked the band even on a major they maintained a diy attitude
Something I learned yesterday was that husker du sold out on 'flip your wig' and threw away their legacy, but I won't ever forget them from "land speed record" all the wau through and including "new day rising". Amazing unique punk/emo/whatever you want to call it. No 90's ripoff or anything of today could ever dream of putting out so many amazing records... But alas, everything falls apart... Evertyhing falls apart...
I can picture myself getting lost in that old car parts lot in husker du's past. Walking through a doorway into where things used to be cool. Where music was fucking awesome, punk, metal, all genres were as one. All the pop contrived sellout boy/rapper acts never existed and you could turn on the radio and listen to damn good music whenever you wanted! Oh and stop listening to anything of husker du after new day rising, that was when the world started to end and their music died in pop stinkdom.
