Nick Williams (me!) hand winding Alan Smith's 57/65 key Gasparini at the Great Dorset Steam Fair 2009, playing 'The Locomotion' arranged by S. Caspers. This wonderful organ, making its first appearance at the show, has just been restored by Jonny Ling from Norfolk. It plays on 65 keys, using the original 57 key scale expanded with extra percussion notes. The bellows are small, believed originally for a 48 note, hence the faster than usual winding speed.

  • why aren't you dancing the Locomotion at the same time?

  • Sorry, I'll have to try that next year!

  • cool, could you do Lambada also?

  • We'll see, but only if you actually sing the words this time!

  • The front can be a true 52 Gasparini, or a copy, but no pipe of this organ has anything to do with that maker, fo sure. Typical dutch street organ... 52 Gasparini have certainly been the most successful french fairground organs, and they're still

common today in France. The StP Gasparini is certainly the best playing 52 in the world.

  • Nice arrangement, but I didn't see the puppets moving much at all.

  • I think this song would sound better on "De Mascotte"

  • The façade of 'de Vonderling' was based on that of the Utrecht museum's Gasparini, hence the similarity.

  • That organ sure looks like a lot like the one in Utrecht; is this resemblance original or new to the restoration?

Regardless; you would never mistake the two musically since this one is closer to a familiar street organ whereas the other one is early and closer to a fairground organ. (then again, this one might have been changed a lot in the ensuing decades)
