Here is another track I found (whilst searching for something else) on an old cassette tape made long ago.
I am posting it to see if any of my 'regulars' can date it, or tell me where it was recorded. Also, does anybody have other recordings of the incredible Sidney Brown on brass bass?
Some nice 'duets' with Jim Robinson's trombone and "Little Jim" Brown's bass seem to be the reason why I kept it, in the first instance, and I wonder if more were recorded at that time?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

  • Clive: Sidney Brown was Jim Robinson's nephew and was therefore nicknamed Little Jim. He & Jim recorded together on the great Sam Morgan sides made for Columbia in 1927. Sidney plays string bass on these tracks. The whole of these 1943 sessions are now available on two CDs.

  • Thanks, yet again, Rob.

  • Hi Clive, here is the info.Recorded in a room on St.Philip St in N.O.May 15,1943 -Personnel-George/Jim R./Lawrence M/Edgar M./Jim Little(not Brown)- (George Lewis N.O. Stompers-5 tunes-Two Jim Blues/Climax Rag/Closer Walk/Don't Go Way Nobody/ N.O. Hula)Next day in the Gypsy Tea Room on St Anne's St.they added Kid Howard on trumpet and Chester Zardis(bass)replaced Jim Little.Another 9 tunes(mostly double takes) were recorded and the complete 14 tunes were issued on the Climax and Blue Note labels

  • MANY thanks, Bill.

Does that mean that, somewhere 'out there', somebody has the other four tracks made on the 15th. May 1943 with that superb brass bass?

Come on, you afficionados, search your archives!!

  • Another "blast from the past"-what a band!Tremedous music.Real NO music at it's best!Thank you for the clip.

  • I have the very sousaphone Sidney Brown (aka Little Jim) played on this side. It is also old enough that he may have used it for a double (as was the custom) when playing for the Morgan band. That is something I am trying to research whether Brown doubled on tuba in the Morgan band. I'm betting he did.

  • Hi MoleDFigg,

Ive just loaded Deep Bayou Blues, Milneberg Joys and I have Two Jim Blues and Climax Rag to come.

  • Sorry Clive, I was wrong. It was Sidney (Little Jim) Brown on brass bass. From an old guy like me what more do you expect? George and his music lives on!!
