Alfonso X el Sabio (1221-1284) - Cantigas de Santa Maria - Porque trobar - Prologo

For making verse demands insight,
that is why whoever wants to do this
has to possess this, as well as reason,
so that he can put into words
what he means and wants to say,
and it is the right way for a poet to work.

And, even though I do not possess as much
of these two capacities as I would like,
I will try to show the little I know,
trusting in God, from whom all wisdom comes,
for I believe that only through Him can I
express what I want to say.

And what I want is to sing the praise of
the Virgin, Mother of our Lord,
Holy Mary, who is the best thing
He has created; which is why
my greatest wish is to be her troubadour,
and beg her to accept me as her

Troubadour and to receive my verse,
in which I desire to show
the miracles she worked; and from now on
I do not wish to sing for another lady,
and through her I will be sure
to regain what others made me lose.

For the love of this lady is such,
that it makes a man better;
and whoever loves her shall not be forsaken,
except through his own fault,
if he fails to observe good and does evil,
for only thus can he lose her love.

Hence I do not want to turn away from her
for I know full well that I serve her well
she will not turn away from me,
for she has never turned from anyone
who called her for mercy,
such prayers she always hears.

Hence my petition to her,
and I hope that she approves:
that, if what I tell about her
in my verses pleases her,
she will reward me in the way she rewards all
those she loves; and whoever appreciate this,
will sing to her more than willingly.

Porque trobar é cousa em que jaz 2 entendimento, porém que-no faz há-o d' haver, e de razom assaz, 4 per que entenda e sábia dizer o que entend' e de dizer lhe praz, 6 ca bem trobar assi s' há de fazer. II E, macar eu estas duas nom hei 8 com' eu querria, pero provarei a mostrar ende um pouco que sei, 10 confiand' em Deus, ond' o saber vem; ca per Ele tenho que poderei 12 mostrar, do que quero, algũa rem.
