Yes it was in fact real It washed up on shore in Holland in June of '07

As of Oct of this year it washed up on Brighton Beach in East Sussex England, at 8ft tall it made quite the stir.
It is believd to have fallen off a ship in Denmark where there is a LEGOland Park.
