Rescue of 3 people 120 miles from N.C.

On May 7, 2007, the Coast Guard rescued nine people from three seperate sailboats in the wake of Subtropical Storm Andrea off North Carolina. This video shows the rescue of three men off the raft of the sunken 44-foot sailboat Sean Seamour II approximately 120 miles from shore. On Feb. 4, 2010, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Drew Dazzo is to receive Canadas second-highest decoration for bravery for rescuing the Ottawa sailor and his crewmates from the raft. Dazzo is among nearly 50 recipients to be honoured by Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean at Rideau Hall. Dazzo is to receive the Star of Courage, awarded for acts of conspicuous courage in circumstances of great peril, according to the Vancouver Sun.

Rescued from the raft were Rudy Snel, 62, and his European crew mates, Jean Pierre de Lutz, 58, and Ben Tye, 31.

(read second) Nevada Smith was in command and had some tough choices to make. As one of the people rescued I, as well as the others, will forever be grateful to this crew for risking their lives to save ours. The c-130 crew, led by Paul Beavis, was also an integral part of the rescue. They managed to find us with the use of a weal 121.5 signal from an old EPIRB. The video does not do justice to what this crew did. This happened 220 nm off Cape Hatteras. The winds were 75-80 knots with gusts up to 85 knots. The waves (verified by radio altimeter were from 50 to 80 ft. One wave came to within 15 ft of the helo. The flying done by Aaron Nelson was incredible and the conditions Scott Nelson on the hoist and Drew Dazzo in the water dealt with successfully were way beyond anything anticipated in training.
