Lettermacaward County Donegal
This lovely village is situated along the wonderful touring route around the broad sweep of Gweebarra Bay. Lettermacaward or "Leitir" as known locally, is the gateway to the Rosses from the South. The "hills of Donegal" roll down to the sea here bringing with them the Gweebarra River (pictured above). The Bay, rich in both Estuary and Marine life, is an ideal location for Angling, Horse Riding, Sailing (pier on south side of the Bay), Scuba Diving, Snorkelling, Swimming and Wind Surfing.
"Leitir" has a population of about a thousand people. Few regions in Ireland can boast of the magnificent coastal and mountain scenery surrounding Leitir. The beautiful Gweebarra Bay and estuary attract many admirers while Dooey beach is one of nature's great unspoilt beauties and a favourite with surfers from around Ireland and beyond. Nearby Glenveagh National Park attracts thousands of nature lovers every year while Doochary, some 5 miles from Leitir is a beautiful village nestling in the hills at the top of the Gweebarra Estuary.
