Eighteen years ago the producer set about making a documentary which examined three residential treatments for stammering. These included The Apple House in Oxford, Margaret Evesham and Andrew Bell's Stammering Cured Course. Course. The Director/ Producer had attended the Andrew Bell course (myself). Although frowned upon by the establishment many cases my peers including myself achieved remarkable fluency abeit only for a few months.
Pre and Post treatment videos of stammers should be taken at face value since the pre treatment video would have been recorded with the subject under great duress i.e. talking to a camera, talking about themselves, talking in front of strangers. At the end of the week whatever the course the subject is more relaxed and comfortable with their surroundings and therefore by definition more fluent.
However, I knew these people personally and witnessed them at first hand go through the course. There was a distinct difference in their articulation than those I have met from the other courses and I think this is apparent from the film. However there were an equal number of people who paid their money and were stammering the next day as badly as they were on day one. All of us howeveer fluent was fighting our stammer internally so to claim a cure is playing with semantics and a bit rich. We all used a technique and I regret that Mr Bell has never modified his position regarding the use of the word "cured". As far as I am concerned there is not a cure but the techniques employed do achieve some success however short lived. I at least knew what it was like to fluenct for nine months the only time in my life this was achieved thanks to Mrs Bell and his course. However those that fell at the first hurdles following the course felt very isolated and even more depressed. If only they saw through the hype and took it for what it was, a good technique but certainly no cure.

Normally I tell people in pubs I got my stammer after a terrible attack of Yaws. After a few moments pondering they usually ask me What's Yaws ?
