Von Cello is one of the most influencial cellists alive today. He not only formed the first cello fronted rock power trio in history, he is also known internationally as today's leading cellist composer. His many cello books are published by Oxford University Press under his given name, Aaron Minsky.

This cut from a live show in New York City provides an introduction to Von Cello playing a style that he calls "Metal Cello". Joining him are Thomas Charlap on bass, and John DiGuilio on drums. Tom, an excellent bassist on his own, is the son of the composer of "Peter Pan" and brother of top jazz pianist Billy Charlap. When not playing with Von Cello, John is on the road with Little Anthony and the Imperials and other famous groups.

  • My God! Thank was GREAT!!!! I wish there was more!!!! Hey Von Cello, thanks for starting Symphonic Metal or Bachian Metal. Would you ever do Bach in metal style?

  • Metal Bach would be cool. I did some Bach, Procol Harum style on Breaking The Sound Barriers. It's called "Bach to the Future"!

  • That's funny! This guy is complaining because I "played the same notes over and over"! I guess he never listened to rock music before!

  • At this point I can figure out rock songs on the cello very quickly, but that's after years of figuring out how to play the cello like a rock instrument. Now, thanks to the work of myself and a few others, rock cello is finally becoming accepted and even popular. Yet it still has a long way to go! But then again, the whole rock genre has a long way to go to get back to where it was when great instrumentalists were respected and appreciated. Maybe that's starting to happen again.

  • find 'freewheelers cello' for a more bluesy approach

  • @heenyahinya LOL, oops. Yeah, things were looking much more dismal for rock music, ten years ago. In my opinion anyway.

  • @geoffstockton Hey dude, Von Cello made that video 10 years ago!

  • Wow, I just rated my own comment. I gave it a thumbs up because I'm so awesome.

  • @voncello as a player. composer, improviser, educator and most importantly a very serious and continious student of music for the past 21 years, I've gotta say it sounds as though you haven't been paying close attention over this last decade. I think we've seen some really great bands come along in various rock styles. Musician's with much more vocabulary and creativity than what we saw in the '90s, at least. Awesome stuff, by the way. I really love the sound.

  • APOCALYPTICA RULES!!!!!!!!!!!

  • yeah!! That is awesome! I love cello...what an incredibly versatile instrument. I'm just getting started on guitar--thanks for the inspiration! :)
