Even by the standards of America's struggling airlines, United provides a particularly painful experience. Here's a line of passengers trying to reschedule after a storm diverted flights. No hotel vouchers, no access to the lounge, nothing except this slow-moving line.

  • United is the butthole of airlines, in the business of producing a fresh, steaming pile of poo on demand.

  • @Sunriverlover He may have said that but it's not true; United does NOT do that all the time. Talk to BA's thousands of inconvenienced travellers; talk to people affected by the Lufthansa cockpit crew work stoppages; United had the best ontime performance of all majors in the States in 2009..

  • I got to the Airport in Norfolk to fly to Anchorage for New Years on United. I had my Costco card and my Visa, but not the DL. My DL was left on the nightstand. I got to Seattle to fly Alaska, and they let me check my bag and board. Then they took me off and gave me a hotel room. The next day I boarded again (with my bad already in AK). They wouldn't let me fly and I had to UPS my bag back to LA. That was 2005.

Guess my opinion of Alaska Airlines.?

  • Guitar-breaking S.O.B.s.

  • I don't entirely agree, but they're by far better than the rest. Alaska, FTW!

  • Alaska Air is still this good.

  • We were on a United flight from Heathrow, when they had to return after 2 hours because of electrical problems. We had to re-enter Heathrow through customs and immigration, then wait for a bus (that never came) to take us to a hotel. We took a cab. When we got there, the hotel was ready with a big buffet dinner and hundreds of rooms! I congratulated the manager for getting everything ready at such short notice, and he told me: "We're always ready! United does this all the time!".

  • July, 1983: I was 16 and flew from Seattle to Anchorage on Alaska Airlines, economy class. 4-hour flight, halfway along we got served lasagne with summer vegetables, and since we were over international waters, I got my own small bottle of wine! We will never again see great days like that in air travel!

  • Had to stay overnight at O'Hare because of a United plane malfunction. They did pay for a hotel, and generously gave me a 4 dollar dinner voucher. btw, the plane landed 14 minutes before my connection, but they wouldn't hold the connecting flight for me. Thank you very little United.

  • Check out Westjet in Canada. It's still a fun airline. They have a policy of reimbursing fares if a passenger is delayed 2 hrs or more. And if you have an issue, they will actually bend or break the rules to keep a customer satisfied. The pilots will tell the passengers exactly what is happening in down-to-earth salty language, Just a good airline, and fun to fly. Oh yeah, they actually pay their employees and issue stock as part of salary.
