Dee McKenna, Nutrients for Life spokesperson, demonstrates how to mulch a vegetable garden. Mulching is nothing more than covering the soil with a protective material. Mulch does three things for us: reduces weed growth, holds moisture and cools soil temperatures. If you use organic mulch it will decompose and add nutrients to the soil.

I don't think it would matter if you used hay instead of straw because you put down a newspaper layer first, but hay is 3 times the price of straw and usually has seeds in it that will very quickly take over your garden. I'm sure you used straw in the vid, I'm just pointing out the differences since you mentioned both. Good vid!

@foofarters Wood chips are a no no for vegetable gardens,Wood chips and saw dust should never be dug into the ground they rob the soil of nitrogen. Bailed pea straw is the best the older the better as it peels off in sheets, other wise putting straw on loose is a waste of time , the birds will pick straw up and or the wind will blow all the loose straw away in no time, The best method is to lay pea straw in sheets 2 to 4 inches thick,Old pea straw or hay is also great when dug in .
