Georg Szell è stato un direttore di primo rango, un artista di enorme talento, talvolta ingiustamente negletto. (Adorava Karajan).

Nobody in Cleveland could equal Szell and Rodzinski....the recently deposed music critic of the Plain Dealer was right..the new conductor.....Welser-Most..... is a poor mediocre leader of this fine orchestra

amazing quality for a 1957 recording... it's even better than some recently recorded orchestration

I love the way Schumann maintains that trumpet motive; is it a fifth!? It probably echos in the backround ideas as well. For those who love this exquisite performance- clean with all the notes shining- listen to Szell's great late Mozart symphonies. What control at the end of this movement!!! Outstanding Cleveland...A masterwork. Vive Schumann!

Schumann's music is a dream...

My father, who was a member of the orchestra for over 40 years, has said that there was no one who could interpret Schumann like Szell could.

From what I've been hearing, George Szell was one of the greatest interpreters of the symphonies of Robert Schumann, whose 200th birthday we observe this year. Schumann himself was never terribly comfortable with orchestration and some have said there were weaknesses in the scoring of the symphonies. However, performances such as this one show that Schumann's symphonies were better than even he thought.
