I used to be in the business, and I had the pleasure of being Mr. Bellson's guest at a New Year's Eve party in 1972/1973. It has been a lot of years -- and, as the evening wore on, my memory of events becomes cloudier -- but I think we were at the Brown Derby in Hollywood.
I recall some wise guy asking for a Buddy Rich chart, and Mr. Bellson responded by performing "You Rotten Kid" from "West Side Story" with the same arrangement used by Mr. Rich. "So there, kid!"
This must have been before Louie developed the idea of playing with two sticks in each hand. After that his long extended solo's pretty much went the same way, sticks, then brushes, then jingle sticks, then two sticks in each hand and then finally the regular stick finale. He's the only one that i ever saw do the double stick playing.
In my opinion, this was Loiue's best solo.Louie's hands are amazing. You could not be any cleaner, precise or articulate. And on top of that, HITTING HARD!!!!!!!! GO LOUIE!!!!!
thanks for posting mikebuddy1, your a gent.!! lots is said about buddy's boston pops concert but heres louie going one further...playing HIS chart with the orchestra..!! and hes really on form here.!! fantastic..!!!

Louie's most dynamic solo is captured on "Skin Deep" contained on the Uptown Ellington LP.

I agree about the two Boston pops appearances, Buddy's and Louie's. This was one time where Louie really outplayed Buddy by alot in my estimation.
